The Australian Society of Magicians Incorporated (ASM Inc), oldest Magical Society in the Southern Hemisphere, fourth oldest in the world, was founded in in Sydney in 1907. The Melbourne Assembly was founded in 1920 by Les Levante, the famous Australian magician. Ten branches, known as Assemblies, have been formed around Australia since those early days. Melbourne is proud to be known as Assembly No.1. Society membership, in Melbourne, numbers approximately 120, and comprises professional, part-time professional and amateur magicians. Meetings, open only to members, are held on the second Monday of each month with January excepted. Those seeking membership must demonstrate a keen interest in the art and perform either Stage or Close-up magic before the Executive Committee, or otherwise prove their genuine interest.

Members are informed of Local, National and International magical events through the monthly society newsletter, "Magic-Makers". The ASM Inc library is one of the most comprehensive in the Southern Hemisphere, containing both historical and contemporary works, with some of the most treasured books , videos and DVDs. Competitions are conducted in which members compete for trophies and awards. Two of the most prestigious trophies are "The Levante Shield", presented to the society by The Great Levante in 1954 for the best stage performer and "The Selwyn Silver Salver" which was donated in memory of Tom Selwyn for the best manipulation act. The highest award a member can receive is the "Order of the Golden Sphinx". There are also two other levels of this award, "Order of the Silver Sphinx" and "Order of the Bronze Sphinx". These three awards are made not only for magical ability but for exceptional service to the society.
